Monthly Luncheon Club.
In November 2006 the Association Committee was seeking to identify suitable people who could fill the role as President. Ray McClelland volunteered to host a lunch for Past Presidents to discuss the matter. The luncheon meeting was successful, and it was suggested that it might be repeated.
Former President Robin Reid then offered to host a lunch in Knock Golf Club. That lunch was held on 24th January 2007 and was open to B. R. A. Old Boys. Nineteen people attended. It was considered worth repeating and so began a tradition of monthly lunches that has continued until today.
Lunches take place every month except July. The clubs which host them are all golf clubs except for Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club. They are Knock, Shandon Park, Fortwilliam, Greenisland, Bangor, Royal Belfast, Helen's Bay, Royal Portrush, Rockmount, Carrickfergus and Malone. The average number in attendance in 2018 was 46 and the gatherings are the most popular of the Association's regular events.
In its organiser's opinion, too many good lunches are spoiled by speeches and so he has established a rule ('Robin's Rule') that no speeches are allowed. Attendees therefore enjoy convivial company in comfortable locations and uninterrupted conversation.
This monthly event is an excellent choice for Old Boys wishing to catch up with old friends as well as to make new ones and especially important as it brings together alumni from different generations.
